Yesterday I finished One Day by David Nicholls. I'm still not entirely sure how I felt about the book, but I really felt like I knew the characters. That I liked. And I cried at the end. And this quote pretty much sums up my philosophy on how I want to live my life.

I really like this video from Jean-Luc Goddard's Band of Outsiders. I want to learn that dance. The narration sounds like Amelie.

So it's just about that time (4 days away, when I am really really excited to move back to Austin and into my apartment) that I begin to feel homesick and nostalgic.

after long last, my internship is finished.

not going to lie, i'm looking forward to some downtime at home for family and friends (really, just you jro) and then moving to austin. i do want to wrap up a bit.

so, things i learned:

1. no one actually starts to work at 9. gather around the coffeepot to catch up with people before locking yourself in your room/office.

2. make friends to learn the unspoken rules.

3. for whatever reason, your boss will always give you shotgun when you're riding in the car.

4. make an effort to tag along with anyone leaving the office.

5. offer assistance and opinions.

6. i do not want to work a 9-5.30 job.

7. i do want to work at a non-profit.

8. when waiting outside someone's door, it's okay to leave and come back, instead of just standing around awkwardly waiting. or, send an email. perfectly acceptable.

today i made two things based on a color palate from photographer ye rin mok. the reasoning behind this is two fold: one, find new and innovative (and possibly not so great) color combinations. two, understand color, why photographs evoke a certain feeing, and how design might do something similar.

at work, i take little breaks to stretch my brain, eyes, and pen.

i really do believe that only boring people get bored. and inversely, i think i'm becoming boring because of all the boredom that occurs throughout the day. i think i now know that actually, i do need to interact with people. an office/workspace is great. but not for 8 hours. i do not want a 9-5 job my entire life, that i know for sure.

reading glimmer and the wisdom of bruce mau is so interesting, and really reframing my perspective on businesses and consumer goods/services in general. i'm trying to fit together a few different things, like how design can reach a broad amount of people, or how it can affect people... or working alongside the non-profit world.

i'm obsessed with poco-cocoa and abbytrysagain. thankgoodness for austin in two days.

i am blogging on my lunch break, haha. it's raining outside today, so i'm staying in.

summer is about halfway done and i have mixed feelings about this. on one hand, i can't wait to get back to austin and decorate our lovely apartment and see friends and garrett. on the other, i haven't started (not to mention finished) any of the summer projects i wanted to do. i get home tired and listless and don't want to do anything productive. and i haven't been excersizing for the same reason. consequently, i am not remotely inspired or feeling healthy or enjoying the weeks very much. i'm just counting down until the weekend/august. i don't like that.

however, i would like to (as usual) focus on the sunny side.
1. this past weekend was pretty perfect.
2. hamilton pool is heaven.
3. i brought my camera to work today to take pictures walking back & forth from the bus
4. i'm going to make at least one illustration a day with different prompts. suggestions?
5. my friends are visiting for lunch this week.
6. there are actually really pretty & old parts of downtown houston.
7. i finished when harry met sally last night. so great and hilarious. sadly, norah ephron likes mostly the same plots for her movies, but i like it. so that's okay by me.
8. mad men season 3!
9. everyone at work is quite nice and likes what i'm doing so far.

may 2010. our last night in austin

(april 2009 i rode the ferris wheel for the first time. and one year + one month later i could never have predicted everything that would happen.) you said i talk about kerrville a lot and i know this is what memory does and i'm okay with that.

i'm sort of in the process of sorting through the ever-growing folder that is "blogs & inspiration" on my laptop. i found summer pierre's (image map!) work a while ago, but haven't come back to it in a while. she is wonderful. her blog is really awesome, her apartment in brooklyn is super cool, and she wrote a book!

+ this summer (/starting asap) i need to give myself a design education. realizing that school is not enough isn't going to make me a better designer. but doing outside reading and pushing myself to work in my sketchbook daily will. suthara, a visiting designer and one of tuan's classmates/lovers came to speak today. she showed her students work, which was absolutely incredible. she taught a class based around paul thek's four dimensional design questions- see below. they answered all of these throughout 15 projects a week for 12 weeks, working through the history of graphic design. so intense.

+ "our bodies are therefore built from the fossilized debris of once-bright stars that annihilated themselves aeons before the earth or sun existed."

+ "these elements are the ashes of the nuclear fires that sustain the stars." both quotes are from paul davies' superforce. i'm reading it for science. generally not enjoyable, but these words and concepts are amazing.

+ this is a beautifully designed information graphic.

+ san francisco cable car picture! california was quite pretty overall. getting sick was rather detrimental, as was my family's fighting, but i'd like to go back.

i haven't posted in forever. school has been pretty crazy and now its finals week! oh joy. however, that means i am home for christmukkah and then off to colorado in no time. only 4 more days.

i love laporterouge's photos. she and her husband moved out to an adorable farmhouse in the beginning of fall, i think, and her documentation of life there is lovely.

so, want to hear the cutest story ever? danni, from the amazing blog ohhellofriend, got engaged! her boy, nick, took her on a surprise trip to seattle and got these two photographers to sneakily follow them and take photos of them on their journey. then they "happened to be" at this gorgeous old property danni and nick were at. they showed danni all the adorable photos they had taken... along with this!

and then he proposed. :) how sweet. take a look at photographer laurel's website.

in other news, we started watching mad men! it's so beautiful. the opening titles alone have me smitten. it's the perfect blend of modern with the style & advertisements of the 1950s... and don draper is beautifulllll.

i can't stop listening to this song by adele. it's a cover of a bob dylan song, and she sings it beautifully.

whew. hell week part ii is over! my honors paper is turned in- i'm quite happy with how it turned out. it was a comparison paper on the history/influence of wine and coffee! this weekend at home was pretty much spent doing that, with a short break at jro's on halloween to watch poltergeist!

today is an inspiration post extraordinaire!

firstly, among the things I am most excited about in life... art history. my history of photo class is absolutely wonderful and every day i leave class with my brain bursting with excitement and zest! i can't wait to take more. yesterday we talked about the bauhaus. it's an art school in germany that's still operating, but it began in 1918 during the weimar republic after wwi. it was part of the beginning of modernism and so many influential artists taught there, like piet mondrain. (i knew there was a reason i always loved him.) i love the design- especially poster design. i think we do a bauhaus project in a later design class and i'm excited.

last weekend i saw the movie bright star when my mom came to visit. it was wonderful. it's about the poet john keats and his love, fanny brawne. i love john keats' poetry and the movie was beautiful. a bit slow, but we saw it on a rainy day and it was perfect. this is one of my favorite keats poems.

When I have fears that I may cease to be

hi friends! i have not blogged in quite a while because school has begun! things are busy everyday, but the weeks go by so quickly.

this week designer jimmy luu came to give a talk and he also has an exhibition in the gallery: "the office of printed ephemera". i love his work. the exhibit at st. ed's is his most recent letterpress work. he did prints of tweets, facebook statuses, craigslist ads, wanted ads, etc. and archived the impermanent digital world. anyway, he's great!

and now it's time to look at pretty things.

and who can say that cape is not gorgeous?! i've never really been a fan, but that is a work of art.

hello friends & new followers!

yesterday was a beach day with the girls! galveston is definitely not exempt from houston's heat and humidity, but we had lots of fun. i love laying on the beach feeling the air and listening to the waves. a photo update is coming soon, but here's one photo for now. we stumbled upon this when walking along the beach. :)

i move back to austin on saturday! i'm a little anxious about new classes, but so excited to go back. tonight when i was packing i found a box of polaroid film! horray! more polaroids of austin.

Before dear Zoe left, we took a last photo adventure through the suburbs. An abandoned strip mall! We even had to kick out some skateboarders. Haha.

Life is good. Free Press Summer Fest was quite enjoyable, I quit my job on Friday, and we move back to school in two weeks. :)

Definitely the best discovery I have made in a while. The next two photographs are by British photographer Tim Walker. I want to live inside his photographs so that I may live in libraries and beautiful houses and wear dresses on trees.

I really love the lighting in these pictures of vintage slips from Capricious Traveler.

Did you know Urban Outfitters has a DIY section on their website? Printmaking tools, sewing supplies, cameras, looms, DIY jewelry kits, and crafty books! One more reason to love UO- the sale of (now extinct) polaroid film, both 779 peel apart and 600, as well as 600 camera & polaroid packs! Poppytalk has all the info.

And now, I am away to the YMCA. I'm so happy with all the progress I've made this summer, even though every time I go to Mat Science/Pilates I wish to never move again. Haha. :)

Today I stumbled upon {Sandra Juto}! Her photography and illustrations are absolutely gorgeous, and she introduced me to the term Fika! Fika, according to Wikipedia, is a "social institution in Sweden; it means having coffee and often a pastry with friends, family, or a date." GLORY! Can Pink Foam's name be changed to Fika? I think it's a possibility. No, seriously, I do.

Anyway, I have completely fallen in love with her {photographs}. Naturally, I am drawn to her photographs of Fika and cafes, because the Swedes and the Brits have lovely latte art. Please visit {this photograph}. I can't get it to show up on blogger, but it's really great.

It is among my new aspirations to master latte art. Today I was thinking about dinner parties & soirees, and I imagined this lovely party with pretty lights and candles and music and colorful dresses and latte art and Jen's pies and cinnamon oil cookies and little french bread rolls and jam. Just as I started to think when this should commence, I realized the party was held at (the currently nonexistent) Pink Foam. :)

As much as I hate the Texas heat, it does make Sweet Leaf Tea all the better. I suppose that's why iced tea isn't such a huge deal anywhere but here...

i rest facedown on my bed, and i find i am falling back into love with books for the hundredth time.

i remember the summers of books.

the summers spent mostly at the library, where i could walk from my house, with its cool florescent lighting and welcoming children's section. i remember the summer reading club, with the bookmark checklist and library prizes. i remember venturing into the young adult bookstacks and signing the back of my first blue plastic library card. i remember staying up late reading, laying on the cool white tile in my bathroom, fearfully listening for mom's footsteps outside my door.

and i remember the summers of friends.

the summers of sleepovers and swimming pools, of paige's wonderful craft closet. i remember when we watched it takes two over and over. i remember swimming at night with the lights off and the radio on, and coming inside to warm strawberry milk. i remember sunburns and cricket chirping nighttime lit softball fields, and walking with bare feet.

of carelessness and endlessness, these summers i remember.

Hello blogworld! Today was super productive. I went to work (way too early) and ate a cinnamon muffin, ran + swam at the ymca, and made food with dad! We made huevos rancheros with home fries for dinner and my Great Grandma Adele/Great Aunt Lily's oil cookies for dessert. :)

I didn't take any photos of dinner because we were hungry, and also my camera was upstairs. It was really quite great, and I am officially in love with smittenkitchen.com. Check it out!!

Here are the oil cookies! I attempted to make them a week ago but didn't twist them correctly. This time we have successfully modified the recipe, which I'll post next time. They're nice and light and buttery, with cinnamon sugar on top.

And a few weeks ago I made the easiest bread EVER: Irish Soda bread. 30 second knead, doesn't need to rise... pretty much just mix the ingredients together and pop in the oven! It was absolutely wonderful fresh out of the oven with honey on top.

Here's the recipe. I felt like writing it, so let me know if you can't read it for any reason.

And this is the wheat seed bread I made with a really sweet cinnamon honey butter. :)

To make the butter, just melt about 4 tbsp butter until soft, mix with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a bit of honey. Blend with a spoon, and refrigerate until use.

Oh, Disney-Pixar, you never cease to amaze me. If nothing else, go see it for the heartbreaking (in the best way) montage about 5 minutes into the film. Reminds me of the beautiful French animated short La Maison en Petitis Cubes.

I guess the summer got off to sort of a rocky start, but June has been wonderfully great so far. :)

Jen and I took a road trip to Kerrville, Texas, in the hill country. We went for the Kerrville Folk Festival, but mostly to reunite with our best friends. Kerrville is gorgeous, and the folk festival was so much fun.

This is a photograph of the camp- there were tents and flags and recycling bins everywhere.

That night we drove in the cold night air to Waltonia, to the cabins.

We swam in this beautiful river, and I got a great sunburn. :)

When we got home, I decided to make bread. My first venture in bread baking, and this was my first loaf! I used this New York Times recipe for no-knead bread. It came out pretty well, although it would have been better if I used bread flour and stored my bread in a paper sack. :)

My next venture was more complicated- baguette. I bought a great bread book by Paul Gayler and started the sponge starter last night and finished this morning.

Okay, so I also really miss the European coffee + flaky bread + cheese + dessert sort of snack. It's just not quite the same here.

On the bright side, I have straigtened up my room! I think it looks pretty great, especially with JRO's lovely birthday presents!

Cleanliness! Glory! I really miss Austin, however. It's nice to be back in my house, but I've gotten way too used to not living with my parents. I'm being yelled at to turn off the TV, to clean, to go to sleep at midnight. And I can't really just pop out to a Magnolia or an Epoch or any of the other wonderful late night coffeeshops. It's mildly depressing.

I have been obsessing over apartments and design and it's all so delicious. Why can I not have a wonderfully colored house in Austin? Ah, well. I'll just save up all these links and ideas for later. Here are some things that have been inspiring lately. :)

1. I can't get over how much fun these handmade hemp lamps are... and I can't wait to make my own! From the wonderment of Craftynest.

2. Kate Binghaman-Burt (of Obsessive Consumption fame) was feature on the interior's section of Design*Sponge. Isn't her home lovely? Design*Sponge might also be the easiest site to get lost in, and the most well organized. The city guides are great.

3. There's just no getting over how absolutely amazing CursiveBuildings blog and polaroids are. I had a polaroid adventure within 5 minutes of discovering his blog. Eventually they will be posted on my flickr. But for now, here's one of my favorites of his.

4. Inspiration Boards are always essential. Add that to the to-do list.

5. Maria Kalman, painter/blogger for The New York Times. She is absolutely fantasmagorical. Her piece about Obama's Inauguration is wonderful.

6. And a playlist! Do tell me what you think.

Oh, the greatness of small towns. Yesterday and today we visited the glorious, aptly named, Lorena/Glorena, Texas. Photofest ensued. Tomorrow I'm back off to Austin for Passover. After that, it's quality alone time with homework, museums, & coffeeshops. Have a great weekend :)

An confusingly good.bad sort of weekend.

>> Watchmen was absolutely fabulous. Jen and I saw it twice. Once with Isbah and the second time with Collin & Gusty. It's only confusing if you don't pay attention. But it was a fabulous movie- the graphics and cinematography were great, the soundtrack was perfect, and casting was (almost) perfect as well. I had very few problems with it. Also, I think Dr. Manhattan is beauty. Make fun of me if you will.

>> My car got towed at 3 a.m. at the Blockbuster on Guadelupe on Friday. We tried (and by tried I mean inhaled only a few times) Hookah with Collin and Gusty, which was a fun experience. We were actually sitting in plain view of the parking lot, which is the ridiculous part. We got a ride to the lot (squeezing 6 people in a front seat meant for 3) and $192 later, Mark was back. A hilarious experience.

>> Today I got up and did my running/walking thing. I walk 3 and ran 2 and a half, in between the walking laps. Then, after stumbling upon Joshua Heineman's blog and amazing flickrr, felt the need to go walk along South Congress and take a few polaroids, which I did. I love the way blocks of color and paintings and stripes look in Polaroids. It was a nice adventure. I'll post them soon.

>> After that, I ended up at Progress Coffee to work on my Social Justice paper. It's a great working environment, and I was sitting along the wall that opened to the outside, so I was sitting inside, and not in the sun, but I was outside at the same time! Today was gorgeous. However, it's been one of those days... like the French short film. I feel 91 centimeters from myself.

>> Today I couldn't help but be absolutely flabbergasted and furious. Tell me: are girls who throw themselves on boys at parties any less girls than the ones a mutual friend would set you up with? Are the girls at parties any less people? You cannot justifiy that objectification simply because both of the people involved are whoring it up.

Sorry, that was much more of a rant than an inspiration post. Ah well.

I haven't been here in a while... Anyways, Valentine's Day was s'wonderful.

Jen and I braved the mass amount of people that flocked to Whole Foods and made cupcakes for each other, and got sweets for the Dujarie party.

Then we got all dolled up and went out with Gusty to eat, followed by coffee at

Green Muse and ice cream and confessions of love and friendship and Casablanca.

We are exhausting Robby Marc, III, my typewriter. Jen and I both used him for our Valentine's, and they were the loveliest Valentines in Valentine History.

St. Valentine told us so.

After a night full of crazy with Jen, Kelsey, JRO, Kadence, and Gerald, I am completely enamored with ABC's Pushing Daisies. Not only is it really quirky and clever, but apparently the creator was inspired by Amelie, my favorite movie. His colors are beautiful, he used "Guilty" (from the soundtrack) and there are so many wonderful little phrases and visual references thrown in there. I've only seen two episodes. I must see them all.

Tell me Lee Pace isn't gorgeous. And he went to Klien High School! But Pushing Daisies is also great because of the simply wonderful words. Such as...

"She read about people she could never be, on adventures she would never have. Life was good enough until one day it wasn't. Chuck wanted more. But at Boutique Travel Travel Boutique she got more than she bargained for."

and...

"Chuck: I can't even hug you? What if you need a hug? A hug can turn your day around.

Ned: I'm not a fan of the hug.
Chuck: Then you haven't been hugged properly. It's like an emotional Heimlich. Someone puts their arms around you and they give you a squeeze and all your fear and anxiety come shooting out of your mouth in a big wet wad and you can breath again."

Lately I have been thinking.

So although I don't exactly believe most minorities are being "oppressed," I feel that statistically, something has to be wrong. I don't believe that certain races are inherently less intelligent than others. Therefore, I draw the conclusion that something must be wrong within the system. Some little, teensy tiny thing. Just because it doesn't make sense.

Therefore.

There are so many wonderful, beautiful movies and books and stories and photographs about two people who find one another perfect, and fall in love, and are for each other. Together. And even more stories about quirky, slightly shy, atypical people who find each other. So I'm drawing the conclusion that it's not as difficult as people say. Because odds are, if there are enough movies and stories about that sort of thing, it must actually exist.

Here's the glorious photo update from yesterday's colorful adventures.

Models are Zoe and Jennifer. :) Next we proceeded to make pretty painted pancakes.

The batter was definitely the best part, especially because they are in Jen's great Fiesta bowls. I love Fiesta Dinnerware. Also eating them. Because pancakes are delicious. I go back to Austin in like three days. I'm really excited.

I would like you for my own.

I got my camera back today, which makes me infinitely happy. I took a billion pictures to commemorate the occasion. Get excited.

Have I mentioned how much I love birds? Their movement, their musical little tweets and twitters, fake vintage bird figurines, songs about birds... you know.

Aren't they cute? Eventually I'll make a fabric bird, like in Science for Sleep.

I'm working on my indie short (film) for IndieFest09. I don't want to spoil it, so I'll just say it has birds in it.

Robin's Wedding Shower

I just got back from San Antonio for my cousin Robin's bridal shower. It was quite fun. Amy (my cousin and the Maid of Honor) hosted, along with my Aunt Ilene's Mah-jong friends. The Mah-jong ladies are adorable, and the shower went really well. I made the table decorations (mirror and confetti are the Martha Stewart Wedding line for Wal Mart) and little note tags as a guestbook. Amy got the cupcakes from The Cake Shop in San Antonio. Aren't they cute?

It felt so comforting to be back at Aunt Ilene's house. I feel like so much of my childhood has been steadied by the Goldman’s and their homes. It’s so great that the play room hasn’t changed at all in fifteen years. Old Spurs pictures and posters of 90210 t.v. stars and Kate and Leo in Titanic still grace the walls. I remember sitting in those circle bucket chairs and watching Babysitter's Club until we fell asleep and promptly fell off the chairs. The house still smells faintly of cat food, even though Rocket died years ago. Robin and Amy’s rooms still have their stuff inside, and the pictures on the walls haven’t changed. Just the people in them.
